GPF1 is a new initiative collaborating with women's groups in Senegal. It includes 25 groups, each consisting of 100 women. In the past, they were provided with a well and metal fencing, but the fencing is now deteriorating. As part of this project, they will plant a permanent living fence—a crucial element of the Forest Garden Approach—and will collectively develop a forest garden on their land.
This initiative is one of several that not only focus on agroforestry through the Forest Garden Approach but also contribute to the larger Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative being implemented across Africa.

The Forest Garden Approach engages thousands of farmers in the region to develop diverse forest garden projects. These efforts not only restore the landscape through tree planting but also provide farmers with the skills to enhance soil quality, cultivate an abundance of fruits and vegetables, and grow essential natural resources.
Contribute• Severe food insecurity: According to the UN Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), Africa could lose two-thirds of its arable land by 2030 if
desertification (the expansion of arid, desert-like areas) is not halted.
• Expanding drylands: The disappearance of trees and vegetation due to
overgrazing, declining soil fertility, demand for fuelwood, and the impacts of climate
change.
• Increased conflicts: Rising tensions between farmers and herders over scarce
natural resources.
• Livelihood challenges: Loss of livestock, reduced agricultural productivity,
and widespread malnutrition.
• Migration: Driven by the above issues, along with a growing youth population
lacking access to meaningful employment.
